What does Om, Shanti, Shanti, Shanti mean?

Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti is something we chant together at the end of every one of my classes. But what does Om Shanti mean? In this short video I created for my Mindful Monday series I offer my explanation for this chant.

Today I want to share with you some information about the mantra that I use at the end of every class. At the end of every class we close by saying Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti. In essence, Shanti means peace. Om is kind of that Universal sound that when all things are operating together and in harmony that sound is believed to be what is created. And Shanti means peace. It’s chanted three times at the end of each class as a sort of invocation to go in peace. - peace in your actions, peace in your words, peace in your heart. The idea is to take this peace with you as you come off your mat and go about the rest of your day.

Next time you’re in class, chanting “Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti”, know that you are asking for all students, including yourself, to go in peace.

This chant isn’t just for when your on your mat. It can be used in meditation. You can chant it on your own (like when driving in the car) to focus your attention. It can be used any time you want to draw in peace.
