It is such a familiar phrase that we may say it without really thinking about what it means. We go to yoga practice. We practice yoga. We roll out the mat and begin again.
But the word practice is important.
A practice is something you continue to return to. It is something you keep working with. It is not something you do once, master, and then move on from. That is especially true in gentle yoga, because every time you step onto the mat, you are meeting a body, mind, and life that may be a little different than it was the last time.
Yoga Is Not About Getting It Perfect
There is a saying: practice makes perfect.
But in yoga, I do not really feel like that applies.
Yoga is not something you do until you finally get it right. It is not a performance. It is not a test. It is not about proving that you can make the perfect shape with your body.
Your gentle yoga practice is a place where you keep showing up.
You practice paying attention. You practice giving to yourself. You practice moving your body in a way that feels good to you.
And because you are continuously evolving, changing, and growing, the practice is always new.
Every Time You Come to the Mat Is Brand New
Even if you have done the same pose many times before, you have never done it in this exact moment.
Maybe today you feel strong and steady. Maybe today you feel tired. Maybe your body feels different than it did last week. Maybe your mind is busy, or your heart feels heavy, or you simply need a quiet moment to come back to yourself.
That is why the practice matters. It gives you a way to meet yourself honestly, without needing to be anything other than who you are right now.
A Lifelong Practice of Showing Up
Yoga is meant to be a lifelong practice.
Not because there is some finish line waiting for you, but because there is always room to continue to evolve, grow, expand, and return.
When you look at your time on the mat this way, the whole experience can soften.
You do not have to ask, "Am I doing this perfectly?"
You can ask, "Am I here?" You can ask, "Am I listening?" You can ask, "Can I show up for myself today?"
That shift can change the way you experience your gentle yoga practice. Instead of trying to become something else, you give yourself permission to be with what is already here.
Your Mindful Monday Practice
This week, the next time you come to your yoga mat, pause for a moment before you begin.
Remind yourself:
I am here to practice. Not to be perfect. Not to get it right. Not to be anything other than who I am right now.
Just to show up and practice.
Notice what changes when you bring that frame of mind with you. You may find more patience, more kindness, and more space to listen to your body.
Try it this week, and let me know how it changes your experience on the mat.
