Chair Yoga Is More Than You Think

What comes to mind when you hear the words chair yoga?

For many people, the image is limiting. They assume chair yoga is only for someone who is weak, incapable, or unable to do “traditional” yoga. I have heard this from student after student.

But chair yoga is not a lesser practice. It is an opportunity to claim and own a practice that works for your body.

The Chair Creates More Options

A chair gives us an incredible array of choices. Some students practice both on the floor and with a chair because each approach offers something valuable.

And chair yoga does not mean sitting for the entire class. We can work behind the chair, use it for support, explore poses in a different way, and find stretches that feel more accessible.

That is the beauty of chair yoga. It gives you another way to be present in your body without asking you to fit someone else's idea of what yoga should look like.

You Do Not Have to Get on the Floor

One of the biggest benefits of chair yoga is that you do not have to sit on the floor or worry about getting back up again.

Choosing that support is not a sign of weakness. It is a way of accepting where you are today, then strengthening and moving forward from there.

Chair yoga can help you move, stretch, and build strength in an environment that feels safe, welcoming, and comfortable. You are not giving up your practice. You are making the practice your own.

Shift the Picture in Your Mind

If your picture of chair yoga is a group of Golden Girls reaching toward the sky without really moving, it may be time to take another look.

Chair yoga can be active, meaningful, and surprisingly versatile. It is yoga for real life, real bodies, and real people. You do not need to prove anything before you begin.

Come as you are. Start where you are. Let the chair give you more ways to practice.
