The Art of Wakeful Rest in a Chair

Do you think you truly know how to relax?

I find that it can actually take us a while to settle into deep rest, which is why it's so important to take time for Savasana (Corpse Pose), or wakeful rest, at the end of every yoga practice.

And guess what? It is perfectly fine to do Savasana from a chair! This is vital because whether you're traveling, working from home, or simply need a quick reset, it's a great tool to have. However, I've observed that sometimes when we sit in a chair, we don't really know how to fully relax.

Here are a few tips for mindfully finding true relaxation and support in a chair Savasana:

  • Support the Arms: You want your arms fully supported. Avoid resting your hands on your lap with your elbows floating in mid-air, as this can actually put strain on your shoulders and arms. Rest your forearms gently on your thighs, or let them hang naturally by your sides, supported by the chair's arms if you have them.

  • Ground the Legs: Keep your feet flat on the floor directly underneath your knees. Sometimes people extend their legs out, which can create tension and discomfort. When your feet are grounded, your legs can fully relax.

  • Head Alignment: Keep your head upright and balanced directly on top of your spine. Your head should be able to sit comfortably above your spine without strain. Leaning your head back, or slumping your shoulders backward, actually creates a lot of tension in your body, even if it feels "easy."

The Mindful Chair Savasana:

When you next have the opportunity to relax in a chair, or formally do Savasana from one, practice these steps:

  1. Sit bones are anchored in the chair.

  2. Feet are under the knees and flat on the floor.

  3. Spine is long, and the head is upright.

  4. Arms are supported.

  5. Close your eyes.

  6. Relax your shoulders, legs, and face.

Get still and quiet. Stay awake, but stay at rest. That is the essence of Savasana. Bring your full awareness to the posture and allow yourself to truly relax in the chair.
