Are you a courageous person or a fearful person? Or maybe you're actually both.
I believe that courage isn't the absence of fear; it's being afraid and doing the thing anyway. It's not about waiting until you feel ready or completely unafraid. True courage is taking the leap despite the fear.
I experienced this firsthand when I was publishing my book, Shedding Shame. I had a lot of fear about others reading my story and revealing secrets I'd kept for most of my life. I was never going to be ready for that, so I had to publish my book despite the fear. The same is true now that I'm a speaker. The first time I got on stage to share my story, I was really afraid, but I did it anyway. That's the courage I found, and that's what being courageous is all about.
This week, I want you to think about something you might be afraid to do, and do it anyway. Maybe it's something big, like jumping out of an airplane, or maybe it's more personal, like:
Walking into a yoga class for the first time.
Having a difficult but necessary conversation where you speak your truth.
Training for a marathon.
Hiring a personal trainer.
