The Secret to New Habits (Pairing & Anchoring)

Do you have a new habit you really want to start, but you keep forgetting to do it?

Today’s Mindful Monday is all about a simple but life-changing trick: Pairing. I hear from students all the time—even those who attended my recent Meditate and Manifest Retreat—who say, "I love the way I feel when I meditate, but I just can't remember to do it once I get home!"

If this sounds like you, I have good news: The secret isn't more willpower; it's finding an Anchor.

What is Habit Anchoring?

The best way to establish a new habit is to pair it with an old habit—something you already do every single day without thinking. In the world of behavioral science, this is often called "Habit Stacking."

By "stacking" the new behavior onto an existing routine, your brain uses the established habit as a neurological trigger for the new one. You aren't trying to create a new time slot out of thin air; you are simply hitching a ride on a train that is already moving!

Common Anchors for Mindfulness:

  • The Morning Brew: Meditate for 5 minutes while your coffee is brewing or right before your first sip.

  • The Daily Refresh: Take three deep, conscious breaths or do a short chair yoga stretch right after you step out of the shower.

  • The Pet Walk: Practice 60 seconds of silent mindfulness right before you clip the leash on to take the dog for a walk.

  • The Dinner Bell: Pause for a moment of silence and gratitude before you sit down to eat your evening meal.

Your Challenge This Week

What is one new habit you want to create? Don't leave it to chance or rely on your memory alone!

  1. Identify your goal: (e.g., I want to practice my One-Breath Reset).

  2. Choose your Anchor: Pick something you never skip (e.g., Putting your keys on the hook when you get home).

  3. The Pair: "When I put my keys on the hook, then I will take one mindful breath."

I’d love to hear from you: What habit are you trying to start, and what is your "Anchor" going to be? Leave me a comment below!

If you found this tip helpful, please share this post with a friend who is working on a new goal. Have a beautiful, consistent day.

Namaste!
