Finding Your Balance (and Gaining Confidence)

Do you struggle with balance? I hear it from my students all the time. It can feel difficult, and the fear of falling can be a major roadblock to even practicing. It's really hard to improve our balance when we're so worried about losing it. But what if you could learn to balance safely and with confidence?

Today’s tip is all about finding your balance and letting go of the fear.

When you practice a balance pose, here's what I want you to try: find a wall and go really close to it. But instead of just standing next to it and using your hand for support, stand so close that if you need to, you could lean your whole body into the wall for support.

Let’s take Tree Pose (Vrksasana), for example.

  • Stand with your hands at your heart and your knee out to the side, foot resting on your inner ankle, calf, or thigh.

  • Now, practice leaning into the wall and then shifting just a little bit away from it. You might even find yourself touching the wall slightly, just enough to give you that solid support.

  • You can also try this with your knee simply lifted in front of you. It doesn't really matter how you do it, just practice standing all the way next to a wall.

This simple adjustment helps you gain confidence and reduces the fear that comes with practicing balance. The wall is your safety net, allowing you to focus on the subtleties of shifting your weight, engaging your core, and feeling stable. It's important to practice balance, but it's even more important to do it safely.

So, try this tip today. Anywhere in your house, stand next to a wall and practice standing on one foot. Begin with a simple shift of your weight and work your way up. Do whatever you can to strengthen and gain more balance. You'll build the physical strength and the mental confidence you need to take on any balance challenge, on or off the mat.

Namaste.
