Do you sometimes rush into class, frazzled and nervous? It happens to everyone! But your very first act of yoga is how you enter the sacred space.
Today's Mindful Monday is really about sharing some etiquette and tips on how to manage yourself and respect the shared space in a yoga class. These practices honor not only the community but also your own precious time on the mat.
Respecting the Start Time
Your first act of mindfulness can be arriving on time.
Be Early (If Possible): Do your best to show up on time. Arriving a few minutes early gives you a chance to really get ready, prepare your mind, and make sure your mat and space are set up without feeling rushed.
Avoid Distraction: Rushing in after class has started is highly distracting to everyone who is already settled and beginning their practice.
If You Are Late: Yes, please do come! I never want anyone to skip class because they're running behind. But if you are late, please enter quietly and slowly, moving respectfully and knowing that everyone else is on their mat and focused.
Honoring the Sacred Space
When you set your mat up in a yoga space, you are setting your sacred space. It's important to be mindful of everyone else's sacred space as well.
Walk Around Mats: When you walk into a room full of mats, do your best to walk around other people's mats. Don't step onto someone else's mat unless absolutely necessary and with permission.
Remove Shoes: Always take your shoes off before entering the practice area. This is a basic way to show respect for the cleanliness and sacredness of the space.
Unplug and Tune In
This is perhaps the biggest key to true presence in class:
Turn Off Your Phone: You must turn your cell phone completely off. A buzz, beep, or ring is incredibly disturbing to the peace of the entire class.
Honor Your Practice: More importantly, you deserve that time to practice and give to yourself without any distractions. Leave your phone in the car, or turn it off before you settle down. Even if you're practicing from home, it's good to leave your phone in the other room.
