What Counts as Meditation? (The Surprise on Your Yoga Mat)

If you’ve ever stepped onto a yoga mat, I have a surprise for you: You have already meditated.

For today’s Mindful Monday, I want to shift your perspective on what it means to be a "meditator." Many of us carry this image that meditation only happens while sitting perfectly still in silence, perhaps with a clear mind and a perfect lotus pose. But the truth is much simpler: meditation is just the act of using an anchor to root yourself in the present moment.

The Yoga Mat as a Meditation Cushion

Think about the last time you practiced Warrior II. When you are focused on the alignment of your front knee, reaching actively through your fingertips, and grounding your back foot, something happens: it becomes nearly impossible to simultaneously stress about what’s for dinner or replay an argument from last week.

In that moment of intense focus, your physical body and your breath become your anchors. That total absorption in the sensations of the present? That is meditation. Whether you are moving through a flow or holding a static pose, you are training your mind to stay right here, right now.

Why This Perspective Shift Matters

  • You are Capable: You don’t need to "learn" how to meditate from scratch; you just need to recognize the moments when you’re already doing it.

  • The Benefits are Already Yours: You are receiving the calming, grounding benefits of meditation every time you move mindfully on your mat.

  • Willingness is Key: It doesn't require a silent room—just the willingness to show up for yourself and stay present with your sensations.

Your Practice This Week

The next time you are on your yoga mat (whether at the beach, in a studio, or practicing chair yoga) perceive your practice as a moving meditation. Notice how it feels to intentionally anchor yourself in your body.

I’d love to know: Does this change how you feel about your yoga practice? Does it make meditation feel more "doable" for you? Leave me a comment below!
